Partial Hospitalization

Partial Hospitalization Program

The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is designed for children and adolescents, ages 4-17, who are experiencing emotional or behavioral concerns which prevent them from successfully functioning in their day to day life. The PHP program is a group based therapeutic program occurring during the day that allows the individuals to receive intensive treatment in a structured therapeutic setting. During the day the individuals are able to build, practice, and strengthen new skills and return home each evening to continue practicing and using the skills.  The PHP program provides a safe, positive, non-judgmental environment for children and adolescents where their strengths can be build upon and skills developed to assist in returning to an optimal level of productivity.

The Partial Hospitalization Program is held five days a week, Monday – Friday, from 9:00am – 3:00pm.  The SBHS PHP team is made up of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of psychiatrists and Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse practitioners, nurses, licensed therapists, expressive therapists, teachers, and behavioral health technicians with the focus of developing individualized treatment interventions for each participant.  The Partial Hospitalization Program provides intensive and structured treatment after transitioning from an inpatient treatment program or for those who require a more intensive treatment than found in traditional outpatient services.

Individuals in the program are split into groups based on their age with separate programming for Tots (ages 4-6), Children (ages 7-10), Pre-Teens (ages 11-13), and Adolescents (ages 14-17).  Each program uses evidenced-based interventions that are developmentally appropriate for the age and needs of the group members.  Therapeutic groups build skills on emotional regulation, conflict resolution, anger management, coping with depression or anxiety, and healthy decision making.  Treatment incorporates Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Expressive Therapy, and psychoeducation.  Each individual also receives individual therapy and family therapy.  The PHP psychiatrist and/or Advance Practice Nurse provides medication consultation and management to participants.   The certified teachers allow for participants to keep up with school work by providing daily academic time in addition to providing recommendations that may allow for the participant to be more successful upon returning full time to the academic environment.

Typically, individuals participate in the Partial Hospitalization Program for 10-12 days, although this varies from participant to participant based on the individuals needs and progress of treatment goals.  SBHS Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP) provides follow-up treatment subsequent to discharge from the PHP program.  IOP provides continued intensive treatment for half the day while participants attend school half of the day allowing for a successful transition and gradual return to home and school.  Please see SBHS Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) page to learn more about SBHS IOP Programming.
