Mental Health Services for Teens at Streamwood Behavioral Healthcare System: Why Choose Us?
Streamwood Behavioral Healthcare System (SBHS) offers age-appropriate mental health care that helps teens (12-17) navigate challenges and feel more capable in their everyday lives.
Adolescence comes with emotional shifts, growing responsibilities and relationship issues. When these pressures become too much, supportive, compassionate care makes it easier to get back on track. We offer structured programs that help your child cope and move forward in healthier ways.
Highlights of our program include:
- Developmentally matched care: Adolescents take part in groups built around their age and stage of life. Pre-teens focus on emotional awareness, friendships and boundaries, while older teens explore identity, relationships and responsibility. This format enables them to connect with others and take an active role in treatment.
- Academic support: Education continues during treatment with licensed teachers on-site. We also coordinate with school staff to manage assignments and help your child transition back to school. These efforts enable your child to catch up on missed work and create a smoother transition back to the classroom after treatment.
- Family involvement: We include children’s families and support systems in treatment planning from the beginning. Family sessions focus on improving communication and making daily life more manageable. When everyone is involved, change feels achievable.
- Ongoing treatment: We offer a wide range of care, from inpatient acute treatment to full-day group therapy and individual outpatient services. These offerings help your child continue to build on their progress. As they move between programs, staff help guide treatment in the right direction, making each step feel more doable.
Specialized Mental Health Services for Teens
SBHS provides services that help teens receive the care they need, including:
- Autism behavioral services: A board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA) works with teens on the autism spectrum to develop plans that reduce disruptions and improve daily routines.
- Medication management: This outpatient service is for teens on psychiatric drugs, even if they aren’t participating in therapy with us. Providers track treatment response and adjust prescriptions as needed. Learn more about medication management.
- Psychological assessments: These assessments clarify diagnoses and inform treatment or school-based planning. Results can support individualized education programs (IEPs) or point to the need for additional services.
- Tele-psychiatry: Your child may be eligible to undergo outpatient intake assessments or medication management from the comfort of home. Find out more about tele-psychiatry services.
Our Adolescent Behavioral Health Services
Whether your teen needs structured daily treatment or a weekly space to talk through what’s on their mind, we’re here to help.
Mental health services for teens include:
Adolescent inpatient program
Our adolescent inpatient program, for children ages 12 to 17, provides short-term help to relieve a mental health crisis. Each day includes individual and group therapy, school time and activities that teach practical coping skills. We tailor care to the challenges teens are facing, like anxiety, mood swings, self-harm or intense anger.*
Partial hospitalization program (PHP)
Our partial hospitalization program provides a full day of treatment for teens who need help managing emotions, behavior or relationships. It includes group therapy and expressive activities like art or music. Your child returns home each evening, giving them a chance to practice what they’ve learned and stay connected to family life.
Intensive outpatient program (IOP)
The intensive outpatient program provides afternoon group therapy for teens and young adults working through challenges like anxiety, mood changes or difficulty managing emotions. It’s a helpful step for adolescents who need focused care after a recent inpatient stay or extra support beyond weekly sessions.
Summer intensive outpatient program
Our summer IOP provides adolescents with structured mental health support during the summer break. Treatment focuses on topics such as emotional growth, healthy relationships and personal responsibility. Through group discussions and activities, your child builds skills that help them feel more grounded and prepared for the future.
Traditional outpatient therapy
These services can benefit adolescents up to age 21 and include one-on-one sessions with a therapist. Traditional outpatient therapy makes it a little easier to work through issues like depression, anxiety, self-esteem or family conflict. Whether your child is just starting therapy or continuing after another program, sessions center on how to make things better.
